Trust & Safety

Is Sniffy legit?

Last updated August 2026

Short answer: yes — and more usefully, you don’t have to take our word for it. When you buy on Sniffy, your payment is held in escrow by Stripe and is not released to the seller until you confirm the bottle arrived as described. If it never shows up, or it isn’t what was advertised, you get your money back. The protection is structural, not a promise.

It’s a fair question to ask, and we’d rather answer it properly than tell you to trust us. Buying fragrance from a stranger online is genuinely risky — fakes are common, bottles get damaged in transit, and people get burned on Facebook groups and marketplace apps every day. Sniffy exists specifically because that experience is bad.

How your money is actually protected

The single most important thing to understand: sellers are not paid when you pay.

Your payment is captured and held by Stripe — the same payments company used by Amazon, Shopify and Instacart. Sniffy cannot quietly pocket it and the seller cannot touch it. It sits in escrow until one of three things happens:

That’s the whole reason you don’t need to trust the person on the other end. A scammer’s goal is to get paid without delivering, and on Sniffy that isn’t possible.

What stops fake bottles getting listed?

Counterfeits are the real problem in fragrance resale, so there are several layers:

No marketplace can promise a 100% fake-free catalogue, and we’re not going to claim that. What we can say is that a seller has to get past photo verification, provide batch evidence, film the packing, and then survive your inspection before they see a cent.

What happens if something goes wrong?

Before shipping, the seller films a boxing video — the bottle going into the box. When it arrives, you film an unboxing video. If there’s a dispute, those two recordings usually settle it immediately, because it becomes obvious whether the item was wrong at packing or damaged in transit.

Every Sniffy shipment is sent with a prepaid, tracked label, insured for the full value of the bottle. Nothing travels uninsured.

If you open a dispute, the payment stays in escrow while it’s reviewed. Disputes are assessed using the listing photos, both videos, the tracking record and the batch code. If the bottle isn’t as described, you’re refunded.

Who actually runs Sniffy?

Sniffy is built and run by Bobby Jacob, a student founder in Rochester, New York.

“I built Sniffy because I was tired of watching people get scammed swapping bottles in Facebook groups. The whole design goal was that you shouldn’t have to trust the other person — or me. The escrow does the trusting for you.”
— Bobby Jacob, founder

Support is answered by a real person, not a ticket queue. You can reach us at support@sniffymarketplace.com or through the contact page, and you’re welcome to ask anything before you trade.

Being straight with you: Sniffy is new

We launched in 2026 and we’re a small, growing community rather than a household name. We’d rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.

What that means practically: you won’t find thousands of reviews about us yet. What you can verify right now is how the protection works — the escrow is Stripe’s, the shipping insurance is real, the policies below are published in full, and every claim on this page is something you can check before spending a cent.

If you’re unsure, start small. Plenty of people make their first trade on a cheaper bottle to see how the process feels. That’s a completely reasonable way to use Sniffy.

Common questions

Do I pay a buyer fee? No. There’s no separate buyer fee and listing is free. Sellers pay 10% on a sale, or 5% with Gold. Shipping is a flat $8.95, tracked and insured, unless the seller has included it in the price.

What if the seller just never ships? The trade cancels and you’re refunded automatically. They were never paid.

Can I swap instead of buying? Yes — both sides place a refundable deposit into escrow and both get insured labels. Deposits are returned when the swap completes. If one side flakes, the other is protected.

Is my payment information safe? Card details are handled entirely by Stripe and never touch Sniffy’s servers. Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported.
