Decants vs Full Bottles: Which Should You Actually Buy?

Updated September 6, 2026 · by the Sniffy team

A decant is a small amount of fragrance — usually 2, 5 or 10ml — transferred from a full bottle into a glass atomizer. It's the single best thing about the modern fragrance community: for the price of a coffee you can wear something for a week before deciding whether it deserves $250 of your money. And yet people still blind-buy full bottles off a TikTok review and end up with a shelf of regret. Here's how to decide.

When a decant is the right call

When a full bottle is smarter

What decants cost

Price per ml varies by house and demand. Rough 2026 ranges from reputable decanters:

TierExample houses5ml10ml
DesignerDior, YSL, Versace$8–14$14–24
Mid nicheXerjoff, MFK, Parfums de Marly$18–30$32–55
High niche / extraitRoja, Amouage, Creed Aventus$25–45$45–80

The break-even point is usually around 20–30ml: past that, buying the bottle wins.

How to buy decants safely

Decants have a fraud problem of their own — it's trivially easy to fill an atomizer with a clone and label it Aventus. Buy from decanters with a track record, and prefer a platform where the seller is verified and the payment is protected. Sniffy's Decant Shop directory lists verified decanters with escrow-paid orders, and full-bottle listings on the marketplace often link to a "sample it first" decant of the same fragrance.

The best collectors we know follow one rule: never buy a full bottle you haven't worn. Decant first, every time. It's the cheapest expensive-hobby advice there is.

Storing decants

Glass atomizers, kept out of light and heat, hold up for a year or more. Plastic ones degrade faster. Label them with the name and the date you got them; you will forget.

Trade bottles the safe way.

Frequently asked

Are decants legal to sell?

In the US, reselling fragrance you own — including in smaller portions — is generally legal for individuals. Trademark issues arise only when a decanter misrepresents the product or uses brand packaging deceptively.

How long does a 5ml decant last?

About 50–70 sprays. At 2–3 sprays a wear, that is roughly three to four weeks of daily wear, or months of occasional use.

Are decants as strong as the bottle?

Yes, if they were decanted from a genuine bottle and stored properly. A weak or off-smelling decant usually means a clone or a bottle that was stored badly.

Where can I buy decants safely?

From established decanters with reviews, or through a platform that verifies sellers and holds payment in escrow, like the Sniffy Decant Shop directory.
