A decant is a small amount of fragrance — usually 2, 5 or 10ml — transferred from a full bottle into a glass atomizer. It's the single best thing about the modern fragrance community: for the price of a coffee you can wear something for a week before deciding whether it deserves $250 of your money. And yet people still blind-buy full bottles off a TikTok review and end up with a shelf of regret. Here's how to decide.
When a decant is the right call
- You've never smelled it. Online reviews describe how a fragrance smells on someone else. A 5ml tells you how it smells on you, for a week, in your weather.
- It's expensive. Anything over $150 a bottle should be sampled first. The math is obvious.
- It's a "sometimes" scent. A heavy winter oud or a beach-only aquatic might get ten wears a year. A 10ml decant covers that for two years.
- You're exploring a house. Five decants from a niche house teaches you more than one full bottle.
- Travel. Atomizers are TSA-friendly; your 100ml bottle isn't.
When a full bottle is smarter
- You already know you love it. Once you've worn through a 10ml and want more, the bottle is cheaper per ml — often by 3–5×.
- It's a daily wearer. If you'll reach for it three times a week, decants get expensive fast.
- Resale value matters to you. A full bottle holds value and can be sold or swapped later; a decant cannot.
- The bottle itself is the point. Some of us buy the object, not just the juice. No judgment.

In the US, reselling fragrance you own — including in smaller portions — is generally legal for individuals. Trademark issues arise only when a decanter misrepresents the product or uses brand packaging deceptively.
